Nguyen Finding Nemo

Film Research

The introduction of the film starts off happily by introducing Marlin and his family. They're seen having playful banter and also learning that they are expecting children soon. The landscape is lush and full of life and color. The excitement of this expecting couple that has just moved to a beautiful location fills the audience with excitement that makes them want to cheer for and be happy for the couple.

While bantering about possibility of names, Marlin jokingly remarks that half the children should be named Marlin Jr. and the other half Coral Jr. to which Coral replies that she genuinely enjoys the name Nemo.

The mood of the film is drastically shifted when the appearance of a swordfish appears and attacks Marlins family. Tragically Coral loses her life in a desperate attempt to keep her children safe. The sea appears to lose its brilliance of color fading out to dark monochromatic tones in contrast to the once bright and thriving scenery.

This scene contrast the vivid and joyful scene that played just moments before with a happy expecting couple watching over their kids to an empty and cold room where Marlin stands alone desperately searching for any survivors.

By some miracle, Marlin finds a single egg still laying near the home. The egg had been slightly harmed by the chaos but still appears healthy and living. The scene ends with Marlin naming this child according to the wishes of his wife and promising to never let anything happen to his child.

The Happiness that once filled the frame at the beginning of the movie returns but now stems from the excitement of his son wishing to go to school. Marlin hesitates in letting his son venture off to a place that is potentially dangerous in fear that he will lose his son.

During Nemo's first field trip, he experiences how wonderful the sea can be with all of its beautiful scenery and life. His curiosity and imagination are sparked and he appears to want to learn more until he sees some of his classmates venturing off without the teacher.

Initially Nemo stands his ground against the peer pressure to swim out past the reef because he was warned that it was not safe but because of the lack of communication and trust between Marlin and Nemo Marlin misunderstands the situation and scold Nemo causing him to revolt.

Marlin's worst fears are realized when a duo of scuba divers scoop up Nemo and take away from the reef. In desperation, Marlin rushes as quickly as he can chasing after the boat speeding away with his son. The scuba diver's goggles are knocked off the boat during their escape.

Along his search he meets a fish named Dory who struggles with Memory loss but is determined to assist him in his search. Because of Dory's laid back personality, she gets them involved with a group of sharks who have vowed to make all fish their friends.

During the meeting declaring that all fish are to be friends and not food, The lead Shark, Bruce, loses control and begins to chase after Marlin and Dory who struggle to run away. In the process of their escape we learn that Dory has the ability to read. In Marlin and Dory's attempt to escape Bruce, the mask that they find sinks deeper into the sea and along with it the address to where Nemo is.

When Marlin loses hope that that mask is lost forever, Dory steps ups and gives him encouragement to "Just keep swimming". Together, they venture further and manage to find the mask overcoming a large monster-like fish and having Dory memorize the address written on the back of the mask as they escape.

Nemo finds himself now isolated in a new fish-tank at a Dental office in Sydney Australia. In a panic, he gets stuck in the tank filter but manages to escape by himself boosting his independence and confidence that later helps him in more difficult situations.

Marlin begins to grow in character in this scene after he they both wake up from being injured from not listening to Dory's warning to not swim above the trench. He also learns from the sea-turtles that trust is required to give people the confidence to support themselves even if they are alone because they are more than capable.

Further along their Journey, Dory is told to not travel over the trench that leads them to nemo, but is shut down by Marlin because he does not trust her. This scene is a turning point for Marlin where he realizes that Dory is capable of being independent and can make the right choices since he did not trust her to swim under the trench of jellyfish.

Meanwhile, Nemo and his friend's first attempt to clog the tank filter to escape the dental office fails. It's not till After hearing the rumor of his father coming to find save him that Nemo gains the courage and confidence that allows hims to successfully clog the filters.

Despite Nemo's victory against the filter, they are not able to escape. Nemo is faced with the challenege of escaping Darla, who is know for killing past fish given to her. Nemo uses his wits to outsmart the dentist but when his plans go awry his friend step in to help him escape through the sink.

Dory is captured in a net and using past experience from the dentist office Nemo is confident he can help dory escape by making all the fish swim down together on the net. Marlin takes a big leap of faith and trust his son.

Marlin is faced with a similar event as when he first found Nemo after the accident.

Marlin and Nemo are reunited and continue to have adventures with their new friends

Essay

For my movie title sequence, I chose to do Finding Nemo. Finding Nemo has always been a movie that has been close to my heart and teaches valuable lessons that resonate with its viewers through a heartwarming and uplifting story. The five main themes that remain a constant through the course of the film are the colorful landscape, lovable characters, heartwarming story, bubbly personalities, and emphasis on the importance of family and friends. Throughout the movie there is a heavy emphasis on the importance of how together, anything is possible. The film shows the progress of Marlin’s character development as he begins re-learning to trust and work together with the other characters. Though in the beginning he is unwilling to trust others to help him, he learns that they are the people that help push him forward. The movie takes a variety of colorful characters and unique personalities to contrast the main character. This blend of characters creates a team that beautifully portray how the support of family and fiends will take you further than you ever thought could be possible.

Words to Idea + Thesis Statement

Five words: colorful, lovable, heartwarming, bubbly, family

Thesis: For my movie title I chose to do something that represented the feelings viewers get from watching this movie. I wanted introduce the idea of using three simple colors and patterns to create something more. The movie puts an emphasis on how teamwork and family are the most important thing, so I wanted to show this. Each element on it's own is not as vibrant as when it is accompanied by others. By abstracting the illustrations of fish together and blending the three colors (red, yellow, and blue) it creates something vibrant and warm that could not have been achieve without each element working together and complimenting each other.
